Hidden Curriculum: Critical Thinking Question


1.Based on the article and other resources, but using your own words, in 

one paragraph defines the term “hidden curriculum.” 

Hidden curriculum consists of concepts informally and often unintentionally taught in our school system. Social expectations of gender, language, behavior, or morals are examples of this.

It is a reinforcement that can help the student in terms of her values and ethics to have a good social interrelation or intercultural within the school as well as outside of it.

2. Identify and explain at least three examples of hidden curriculum and how each might affect students.

  1. Reproduces social class inequalities.

  2. Outdated social roles are reinforced

  3. Minorities are expected to assimilate to the majority culture.

3. How might a student who is aware of and competent in a school’s hidden curriculum and expectations have an advantage over a student who is not? Explain. I believe that the school always has a pattern to follow where it teaches the student in a subtle way the norms, rules of the school, the student must obey the laws and orders automatically in the school.

4. How might the hidden curriculum benefit students of the dominant culture (white/middle class/heterosexual, etc.) as opposed to others?

Helps prepare them for life in a society beyond school. Teaches children to obey elders.

Help maintain law and order.

5. What are three messages schools’ hidden curriculum sends to students?

Norms, Moral and Power Hierarchies.

6. What aspects of the hidden curriculum do you think should be changed? Why? Explain. 

 I think it should not change because the hidden curriculum has an important role in teaching morals, values, respecting authority, respect for other pupils’ opinions,punctuality, aspiring to achieve ,having a work ethic.
